Mumbai, the financial capital of India, is facing an unprecedented rise in pollution levels with the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings going well above the normal range.

As of Saturday morning, Central Pollution Control Board's SAMEER app reported that the AQI levels in the city are at a "moderate" level with readings showing 160.

At least seven stations across the city recorded ‘poor’ air quality as the AQI breached the 200-mark during the morning hours. As AQI levels deteriorate in Mumbai, a blanket of smog continues to engulf the city.

After Worli, the worst AQI was logged in Mazgaon (254), followed by Borivali East (252), Colaba (246) and Malad West (219).

According to a report by Times of India, a former member of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board said that the smog typically clears out by 9.30 AM. However, in recent days, it has persisted beyond that threshold and clears out around 11 AM or even later in the day.

"Owing to the interaction of winds in the upper air, we had already issued yellow and orange alerts in several districts of the state. It was this phenomenon that brought Mumbai showers during the night. However, no more rain is on cards for the city. Meanwhile, in the other regions of the state too, we have issued a yellow alert for the day (Saturday), after which the rain will subside and stop subsequently," said IMD Director Sunil Kamble in an interview with the Indian Express.

Construction Activities Contributing To Poor AQI

Various construction initiatives, such as metro projects in the city and several areas, are likely to be a contributing factor to the deterioration in air quality in Mumbai.

"There were a whopping 6,000 construction sites active throughout the city back 2023," said, Former Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

To control dust generated from construction activities in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has deployed anti-smog guns with a 50-metre throw capacity. 100 water tankers have also been deployed for washing the roads to remove dust.
